Moravian University

Step into history at Moravian University, a distinguished private institution nestled in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. With roots tracing back to 1742, Moravian proudly claims its place as the sixth-oldest college in the United States and holds the pioneering distinction of being the first to educate women in the original 13 colonies. The university's profound historical significance began with the establishment of the Bethlehem Female Seminary in 1742, founded by Benigna, Countess von Zinzendorf. This groundbreaking institution, initially an academy for young women, laid the foundation for female education in America. Concurrently, boys' schools were also founded by Moravians, eventually merging to form Nazareth Hall. Over centuries, these separate institutions evolved, becoming accredited colleges that maintained strong ties to their Moravian heritage and values.

In 1954, these two venerable institutions — the men's Moravian College and Theological Seminary and the women's Moravian Seminary and College for Women — united to form the coeducational Moravian College. This merger brought together their distinct campuses, connected by the symbolic "Moravian Mile," a tradition first-year students still walk today. More recently, in 2021, the college achieved university status, expanding its offerings while honoring its deep historical commitment to a holistic education.

Today, Moravian University continues to make history. Its campus proudly hosts two buildings, the Second Single Brethren's House and the Widows' House, which were designated as part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2024.
