Morris College

Morris College, a private historically Black college founded in 1908, stands as a testament to enduring educational commitment. With a vibrant community of 421 students, this institution lives by its motto, "Intrare Libris, Dispartire Servire" (To enter by books, to depart to serve), fostering an environment where academic pursuit meets a call to leadership and community engagement.

Born from the vision of Jacob J. Durham, Morris College initially served a broad educational need, from grade school to college. Named in honor of Frank Morris, a pivotal African American leader in South Carolina, the college quickly established its foundational role. It awarded its first bachelor's degree in 1915, marking a significant milestone in its journey to empower generations through higher education. Early presidents like Edward M. Brawley and John J. Starks laid the groundwork for its future success, navigating expansions even through challenging times like the Great Depression.

Throughout its history, Morris College has cultivated a strong academic identity. Under President James P. Garrick, the Department of Religion developed the "Standard Leadership Curriculum," reflecting a dedication to holistic student development. Later, under the visionary leadership of Luns C. Richardson, the college achieved full accreditation and eliminated a substantial deficit, leading to increased enrollment and solidifying its standing. His long tenure, from 1974 to 2017, was a period of significant growth and stability, reinforcing Morris's commitment to academic excellence and institutional health.

Today, Morris College continues its legacy of impact. With dedicated leaders like Odell Richardson Reuben, the first African American to earn a Doctor of Religion from Duke University, the college has always been at the forefront of fostering intellectual and spiritual growth. The institution's commitment to its heritage is evident in recent initiatives, such as receiving funding in 2023 from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to preserve its historic buildings, ensuring that its rich past continues to inspire its bright future for prospective students and their families.
