Morris College

Morris College stands as a proud private historically black college, rooted deeply in its founding principles of learning and service. Established in 1908 by Jacob J. Durham and named after esteemed African American leader Frank Morris, the institution has played a pivotal role in educating generations. Its motto, "Intrare Libris, Dispartire Servire" – "To Enter to Learn, To Depart to Serve" – perfectly encapsulates the college's enduring mission to develop students who not only excel academically but also contribute meaningfully to their communities.

Throughout its rich history, Morris College has demonstrated remarkable resilience and growth. It awarded its first bachelor's degree in 1915 and continued to expand, even navigating the challenges of the Great Depression. The college fostered significant academic development, notably with the Department of Religion's "Standard Leadership Curriculum" and the eventual establishment of the School of Religion as a separate entity, showcasing its commitment to both spiritual and intellectual leadership.

Today, Morris College continues to be a vibrant academic home for its 421 students. It upholds a legacy of strong leadership, from its early presidents who guided its expansion and financial stability to its longest-serving president, Luns C. Richardson, under whom the college achieved accreditation and eliminated a significant deficit. Recent efforts in 2023 to preserve its historic buildings, some dating back to 1924, further underscore its deep respect for its heritage while looking to the future.
