About Mount Angel Seminary
Cultivating future spiritual leaders with a rich Benedictine tradition in the Pacific Northwest.
Mount Angel Seminary stands as a vital center for theological education and spiritual formation in the Pacific Northwest. Serving a multitude of western dioceses, it offers comprehensive undergraduate and graduate programs designed for both those discerning a call to priesthood and lay students seeking deeper theological understanding. The seminary's robust curriculum includes a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, allowing for specialization with double majors in Literature or Religious Studies, alongside advanced degrees like MDiv, MA (Theology), STB, and DMin.
The roots of Mount Angel Seminary trace back to 1882, when Benedictine monks from Engelberg, Switzerland, established Mount Angel Abbey. Driven by a mission to educate, the monks opened Mount Angel College in 1887. Just two years later, in 1889, at the specific request of Archbishop William Gross, the seminary was established, integrating its mission with the burgeoning college, which eventually focused entirely on the seminary's mission.
Today, Mount Angel Seminary continues its legacy with approximately 170 students immersed in a vibrant academic and spiritual community. Students benefit from exceptional facilities, including a main church featuring the largest free-swinging bells on the West Coast. The institution also demonstrates a commitment to sustainability, evidenced by a new seminary building that received a "Best Sustainable Award for Oregon and Washington" in 2006. This blend of rich tradition and modern commitment makes Mount Angel a unique place for formation.
