Mount Angel Seminary

The seminary's rich history traces back to 1882 with the founding of Mount Angel Abbey by Benedictine monks from Switzerland. This strong monastic foundation quickly led to the establishment of Mount Angel College in 1887, and then, by 1889, a dedicated seminary. While the broader college eventually narrowed its focus, Mount Angel Seminary evolved into a vibrant educational hub, balancing a profound historical legacy with a forward-looking approach to theological studies, proudly maintaining its Benedictine heritage.

Academically, Mount Angel Seminary offers robust undergraduate and graduate programs. Undergraduates can pursue a Bachelor of Arts with majors in Philosophy, Philosophy and Literature, or Philosophy and Religious Studies, providing a strong liberal arts foundation for both seminarians and lay students. The Graduate School of Theology provides advanced degrees such as the MDiv, MA (Theology), STB, and DMin, accessible to those discerning a call to the priesthood and lay students passionate about theological study. Unique to the campus are the largest free-swinging bells on the West Coast, housed in the seminary's main church, and a new seminary building recognized with a "Best Sustainable Award" for Oregon and Washington in 2006, highlighting a blend of tradition and modern values.
