About Navajo Technical University
Empowering the Navajo Nation through hands-on education as a pioneering tribal land-grant university.
Navajo Technical University (NTU) stands as a vital public tribal land-grant university, passionately committed to empowering the Navajo Nation through comprehensive education. Since its inception, NTU has consistently evolved to meet the dynamic needs of its community, providing a supportive and enriching environment for its 1777 students under the leadership of President Dr. Elmer Guy. It offers a unique opportunity for students to pursue higher education deeply rooted in cultural heritage.
NTU's journey began in 1979 when it was chartered by the Navajo Nation as the Navajo Skill Center, specifically designed to address the needs of its unemployed population. This foundational mission of practical, impactful education has remained at its core. The institution expanded its scope and was renamed Crownpoint Institute of Technology in 1985, a pivotal step in its growth. A significant milestone occurred in 1994 when it was designated a land-grant college, recognizing its crucial role in agricultural and mechanical arts education, a status shared with only 31 other tribal colleges nationwide.
Continuing its impressive evolution, the institution became Navajo Technical College in 2006, further broadening its academic offerings. By 2013, it achieved its current status as Navajo Technical University, reflecting its comprehensive and advanced academic programs. This commitment to educational excellence and community service was notably recognized by a visit from Dr. Jill Biden during graduation ceremonies in 2013, highlighting the university’s impact and the achievements of its graduates. NTU is dedicated to providing accessible, high-quality education that prepares students for successful careers while honoring and promoting Indigenous culture and values.
