Nazarene Theological Seminary

Nazarene Theological Seminary (NTS) stands as the premier institution for ministerial preparation within the Church of the Nazarene. Established in 1945, NTS emerged from a growing conviction that a dedicated, centralized theological school was essential to meet the evolving needs of the denomination. Rather than solely relying on college religion departments, the church sought a focused seminary experience, culminating in the formal authorization by the Eleventh General Assembly in 1944. This pivotal decision laid the groundwork for a rich legacy of theological education and pastoral formation in the heart of Kansas City.

From its humble beginnings, NTS quickly established itself as a vibrant academic community. The first class, comprising 61 students, began in temporary quarters, supported by the generosity of the Nazarene Publishing House. Its initial faculty, including esteemed scholars like Russell V. DeLong, Ralph Earle, and Mendell Taylor, covered foundational areas such as Philosophy of Religion, Greek and Bible, Preaching, Pastoral Ministry, Church History, and Theology, ensuring a comprehensive academic foundation for future ministers. This commitment to robust theological instruction has remained a cornerstone of NTS's identity.

Today, NTS continues to be a vital center for spiritual and academic growth, dedicated to shaping servant leaders for the global Church of the Nazarene and beyond. Under the leadership of President Jeren Rowell, the seminary upholds its mission to provide an engaging and supportive environment where students are equipped not only with deep theological understanding but also with practical skills for effective ministry. The seminary's move to its permanent 10.5-acre campus in 1950, followed by the construction of its administration, classroom, and library buildings, marked a significant period of growth and stability.
