About Nazareth University

From a women's college in 1924 to a vibrant university, Nazareth empowers futures.

Nazareth University, a distinguished private institution founded in 1924, recently celebrated a significant milestone by elevating to university status on June 1, 2023. With a thriving community of 2,401 students, Nazareth fosters an environment of academic rigor, personal development, and community engagement, all under the leadership of President Elizabeth L. Paul.

The university's rich history began when five Sisters of St. Joseph, at the request of Bishop Thomas Francis Hickey, established Nazareth College of Rochester. Their initial mission was to provide crucial undergraduate education for young women. The first class, comprising just 25 determined students, commenced their studies in a grand mansion known as "the Glass House" on Lake Avenue. As enrollment quickly grew, the college expanded its footprint, moving to a larger facility on Augustine Street in 1928.

Today, Nazareth continues its legacy of academic excellence, offering both Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees, each grounded in a robust liberal arts core. This foundational approach ensures students develop critical thinking skills, broad intellectual perspectives, and the adaptability needed to thrive in an ever-changing world, making Nazareth an ideal choice for prospective students seeking a comprehensive and supportive educational journey.
