About Nelson University
Nelson University: Rooted in history, educating for a higher purpose since 1927.
Embark on a unique educational journey at Nelson University, a private institution guided by the inspiring motto, "Higher Education for a Higher Purpose." With a close-knit community of 2,012 students, Nelson University provides an intimate and supportive environment designed to foster both personal growth and academic excellence under the leadership of President Kermit Bridges.
The university's rich history is a testament to visionary leadership and a commitment to education, beginning nearly a century ago. Nelson University started its life not as a single entity, but through the foundational establishment of three distinct Bible schools across the American South. The earliest of these, Southwestern Bible School, was founded in 1927 in Enid, Oklahoma, under the guidance of P.C. Nelson, laying the initial groundwork for what would become today's university.
This foundational spirit was soon joined by two other significant institutions in the early 1930s. In 1931, Guy Shields established the Shield of Faith Bible Institute in Amarillo, Texas, an ambitious endeavor that uniquely encompassed a Bible school, a grade school, and a high school. Concurrently in the same year, J.T. Little initiated Southern Bible College in Goose Creek, Texas. This institution later relocated to Houston in 1933, where it was renamed Southern Bible Institute, expanding its reach and influence.
These three historically significant Bible schools eventually converged, bringing their distinct legacies and educational missions together to form Nelson University. While specific academic programs aren't detailed, its origins as Bible schools suggest a strong and enduring focus on values-based education and theological studies, preparing students not just for professional success but for lives dedicated to a higher purpose. Choosing Nelson University means becoming part of a legacy that values deep learning and meaningful impact.
