About Neumann University

Inspired by Franciscan values, Neumann University empowers students for service and leadership.

Neumann University stands as a private institution rooted in the Franciscan tradition, guided by its Latin motto, "Veritas, Caritas" (Truth, Charity). This foundational ethos shapes an environment dedicated to nurturing individuals who are not only academically proficient but also deeply committed to serving their communities and leading with compassion. Prospective students and their families will discover a vibrant learning community that balances rigorous education with a profound sense of purpose.

The university's rich history traces its origins back to 1855, when Bishop (later Saint) John Neumann approved the formation of a religious community of Franciscan Sisters in Philadelphia. Driven by their mission to educate and care for others, the Sisters of St. Francis of Philadelphia founded Our Lady of Angels College in 1965, initially welcoming 115 female students. The institution later honored its historical connection, changing its name to Neumann College in 1980 in tribute to Saint John Neumann, a former Bishop of Philadelphia.

Neumann's evolution continued with significant milestones, including the admission of its first male undergraduate students in 1980. Its academic prowess expanded further in the early 2000s, with the approval of its first doctoral program, the Doctorate in Physical Therapy, in 2004, followed by an Ed.D. in educational leadership in 2005. These advancements culminated in the institution achieving university status in 2009, proudly becoming Neumann University.

Looking to the future, Neumann University demonstrated its growth and commitment to an enhanced student experience by nearly doubling its campus size in 2021. Through the acquisition of Our Lady of Angels Convent and additional acreage, the campus expanded from 70 to 133 acres, providing more space and resources for its diverse academic programs and student life. This continuous development ensures that Neumann remains a dynamic and supportive environment for students aspiring to make a positive impact on the world.
