The academy's rich history began with its founder, Jerry Sherlock, a seasoned film, television, and theatre producer whose vision was to create a practical alternative to traditional film schools. Initially located at the prestigious Tribeca Film Center, NYFA quickly grew, necessitating a move in 1994 to the iconic former Tammany Hall building in Union Square. After more than two decades, the institution relocated in 2015 to its modern home at 17 Battery Place, continuing its legacy of innovative education in the heart of New York City.
