About North American Trade Schools

Empowering careers through hands-on training in diesel technology and commercial truck driving.

North American Trade Schools (NATS) stands as a beacon for individuals seeking practical, career-focused training in essential industries. Known for its rigorous programs in diesel engine technology and commercial truck driving, NATS equips students with the specialized skills demanded by today's employers. Students benefit from a hands-on learning environment designed to transform aspiring technicians and drivers into qualified professionals, ready to contribute immediately to the workforce.

The school's rich history traces back to 1970, when it was established as the Diesel Institute of America (DIA) by Sheldon Monsein, then president of Central GMC/Kenworth inc. This unique origin story highlights the school's foundational purpose: to address a genuine industry need for skilled mechanics. DIA quickly became Maryland's pioneering trade school to offer comprehensive training in diesel engine repair, starting its first class in a modest 500-square-foot garage. This direct response to industry demands underscores NATS's commitment to relevant and impactful education.

Over the decades, the institution evolved significantly. After moving to Grantsville, Maryland, in 1983, it expanded its offerings in 1986 to include vital training in commercial truck driving, further broadening career pathways for its students. In 2002, EFC Trade, a Canada-based specialist in career training, acquired the DIA, leading to its relocation to Baltimore in 2004 and its rebranding as North American Trade Schools. Under the leadership of school director Matt Daly, who has been with the institution since its move to Baltimore, NATS continues its legacy of providing practical, high-demand training, ensuring students gain the expertise needed for successful and rewarding careers.
