The school's profound history began in 1879 as the North End Industrial Home, a vital settlement house addressing the needs of Boston's densely populated immigrant community. Pioneering a holistic approach to community service, volunteers from Associated Charities, alongside figures like Pauline Agassiz Shaw, established a foundation built on "elevation by contact." They offered essential vocational training in sewing and laundry, foundational education for children and mothers, and crucial social support systems.

Formally incorporated as the North Bennet Street Industrial School (NBSIS) in 1885, its charter explicitly outlined a mission to train individuals in industrial occupations and foster their overall well-being. Over the decades, it adapted to societal changes, administering woodworking classes for boys and cooking classes for girls until public schools assumed responsibility for pre-vocational training in 1913. Today, under President Sarah B.
