NIC's rich history began in 1933, born out of the Great Depression as 'Coeur d'Alene Junior College' with its first classes held in City Hall. A significant milestone occurred in 1939 when the college moved to its current, historically significant campus – the former site of old Fort Sherman, established in 1878. This move marked its evolution into 'North Idaho Junior College' before adopting its present identity as North Idaho College in 1971.
