Northeast Ohio Medical University

Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED) stands as a vital public health sciences institution in Rootstown, Ohio, dedicated to training the next generation of medical, pharmacy, and dental professionals. Born from a visionary collaboration among Kent State University, the University of Akron, and Youngstown State University in the early 1970s, NEOMED was established to address the critical healthcare needs of Northeast Ohio. It has since evolved from a college of medicine into a comprehensive health sciences university, a testament to its commitment to expanding educational opportunities.

Founded officially on November 23, 1973, as the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine (NEOUCOM), the institution quickly became fully accredited after graduating its first class in 1981. Its growth trajectory continued with the approval of the College of Pharmacy in 2005, leading to a name change reflecting its broadened scope. The university further expanded its academic offerings by establishing the College of Graduate Studies in 2009 and, most recently, the Bitonte College of Dentistry in 2022, proactively addressing a significant shortage of dentists in the state of Ohio.

NEOMED offers a robust academic portfolio including Doctor of Medicine (M.D.), Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.), and Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S.) degrees, alongside various master's and doctoral programs, notably in basic and translational biomedicine. With 1,032 students (Fall 2025) and a comprehensive research program concentrated in seven key areas, students benefit from a rich environment for scientific inquiry and clinical training.
