About Northeastern Illinois University

Break barriers and build futures at NEIU, a diverse public university rooted in Chicago's history.

Northeastern Illinois University (NEIU) stands as a vibrant public university in the heart of Chicago, embodying its powerful motto: "Break Barriers." This institution prides itself on its commitment to diversity and inclusion, proudly holding designations as both a Hispanic-serving institution and an Asian American and Native American Pacific Islander-serving institution, fostering a truly global learning environment within a dynamic urban setting.

NEIU's rich history traces back to 1867, when it was founded as the Cook County Normal School – the very first teacher training institution in Cook County. Over the decades, it evolved through various names, including Chicago Teacher's College, and played a pivotal role in shaping education in Illinois. In 1971, it officially gained university status, becoming Northeastern Illinois University with a broad mandate to not only prepare exceptional teachers but also to offer diverse courses of instruction, conduct impactful research, and provide essential public services.

Strategically located in Chicago, NEIU offers students the best of city life with its main campus in North Park and two additional campuses across the city. The university provides a unique student experience, including on-campus housing established in 2016, and is home to WZRD Chicago 88.3 FM, one of the nation's longest-running free-form community radio stations. With a student body of 5,778, NEIU is a welcoming community for those ready to challenge themselves and make a difference.
