Northern Kentucky University

Northern Kentucky University's journey began in 1948, not as an independent entity, but as an extension campus for the University of Kentucky in Covington. Over two decades, it built a foundation that allowed it to blossom into an autonomous four-year institution, Northern Kentucky State College, by 1968. This marked the start of its impressive growth, setting the stage for what would become a thriving university.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1971 with the merger of the Salmon P. Chase College of Law, formerly an independent law school, which immediately enriched NKU's academic portfolio, particularly in legal education. The university continued its rapid evolution, relocating its main campus to Highland Heights in 1972 and proudly awarding its first bachelor's degrees just a year later. These foundational years underscored a clear trajectory of expansion and academic development.

Such swift and substantial growth led to its elevation to university status in 1976, officially becoming Northern Kentucky University. Since then, NKU has continuously expanded, introducing new construction projects, establishing additional colleges, and fostering a larger, more diverse student body.
