Northern Michigan University

Northern Michigan University (NMU) stands as a beacon of public education in Michigan's scenic Upper Peninsula. Since its establishment in 1899, NMU has evolved from a teacher preparation school into a comprehensive university, offering a rich tapestry of over 180 undergraduate and graduate programs across five academic divisions. Initially founded as Northern State Normal School by the Michigan Legislature, NMU's roots are deeply entwined with the region's need for skilled educators. Its humble beginnings with just 32 students and 6 faculty quickly blossomed, supported by community figures like John M. Longyear, who donated the original campus land. This strong foundation in teacher training paved the way for its eventual transformation into a comprehensive university in 1963, reflecting Michigan's evolving educational landscape.
