Northern New Mexico College

Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) stands as a truly unique institution, not only for its deep roots in the region but also for its pioneering role in U.S. education. It's especially known for its comprehensive technical and vocational programs, providing hands-on training that prepares students for in-demand careers, alongside a growing array of baccalaureate degrees.

Established in 1909 as the Spanish American Normal School in El Rito, NNMC holds the distinction of being the first Hispanic-serving institution in the United States, originally dedicated to training Spanish-speaking teachers. This historic mission laid the groundwork for its enduring commitment to serving the diverse communities of Northern New Mexico. Over the decades, it evolved, opening its Española campus in 1971 and expanding to become the state's first designated community college, broadening its impact with vital technical programs.

Today, NNMC continues to innovate, offering twelve baccalaureate programs, including Elementary Education, enabling students to pursue four-year degrees while staying close to home. The college's El Rito campus remains a vibrant hub for hands-on technical trades like plumbing/pipefitting and electrical, reflecting a deep commitment to practical, career-focused education.

With recent initiatives like the 2019 mill levy approval by local voters, NNMC is expanding opportunities for associate degrees in trades and enhancing dual credit programs for high school students. This includes providing free transportation, ensuring that more residents from surrounding school districts can access quality education and skills crucial for their future and the region's economic vitality.
