NSU's rich history began with community advocacy in the late 19th century, leading to its establishment as the Northern Normal and Industrial School in 1901. After overcoming initial legislative hurdles and land acquisitions in Aberdeen, South Dakota, the school opened its doors in 1902, initially focusing on preparing future educators and providing industrial training crucial for the region's development.

The university's journey reflects remarkable resilience and adaptability. Post-war, it evolved into a Teachers College, professionalizing the teaching profession.
