About Northland Pioneer College

Northland Pioneer College brings higher education to a vast Arizona region, truly expanding minds.

Northland Pioneer College, a vibrant public community college, stands as a testament to community vision and the power of accessible education. Born from the advocacy of Northeastern Arizona citizens in the late 1950s, NPC has grown to embody its motto: "Expanding Minds, Transforming Lives." Serving an expansive region covering 21,158 square miles – nearly the size of West Virginia – NPC plays a crucial role in providing higher education opportunities across diverse communities.

When the Navajo County Community College District was established in fall 1972, it paved the way for Northland Pioneer College to open its doors just two years later, in fall 1974. The demand was immediate and overwhelming, with over 2,000 students enrolling in that inaugural year – double the anticipated number. Classes, initially held in unconventional locations like abandoned schools and hospitals, quickly laid the groundwork for a robust academic environment.

Today, under the leadership of President Chato Hazelbaker, NPC continues to thrive, serving 6,712 students dedicated to their educational journeys. From its humble beginnings with a first graduating class of nine students in 1975, Northland Pioneer College remains committed to fostering academic growth, personal development, and transforming the futures of its students and the broader community.
