Notre Dame College

Notre Dame College, founded in 1922 by the Sisters of Notre Dame, embarked on a mission encapsulated by its motto: "Changing the world, one student at a time." Initially established as a women's college, it provided a foundational education that quickly evolved from two-year teaching certificates to full four-year bachelor's degrees, setting a strong precedent for academic rigor and community engagement from its early days on Ansel Road in Cleveland, before moving to its distinctive South Euclid campus.

The college's history is marked by significant architectural and programmatic expansion. Its iconic Administration Building, constructed in 1927 in the Tudor Revival style, earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places, reflecting its enduring heritage. Notre Dame College demonstrated an innovative spirit by introducing programs like the Weekend College (WECO) in 1978, catering to local residents seeking flexible degree options, long before such models became widespread. This commitment to accessibility ensured that education was within reach for a broader community.

A pivotal moment arrived in 2001 when Notre Dame College officially became coeducational, a move that dramatically transformed its campus and significantly boosted enrollment, nearly doubling its student body to over 2,000 by 2010. This transition expanded its reach and enriched the student experience, fostering a more diverse and dynamic learning environment. The college also launched a successful Master of Education program in 1991, further extending its academic offerings.

Despite its vibrant history and periods of growth, Notre Dame College faced significant financial challenges, leading to the difficult decision to close at the end of the spring 2024 semester. While its physical doors may be closing, the legacy of its educational mission and the countless lives it touched will undoubtedly continue to resonate, with Lake Erie College preserving its historical records.
