About Oakwood University
Oakwood University: A historic HBCU empowering students with vocational skills and spiritual growth.
Oakwood University, a proud private Historically Black College and University (HBCU), stands as a beacon of education, excellence, and eternity. Known for its strong foundation in vocational education and spiritual guidance, it offers a unique learning environment designed to nurture both intellect and character.
Born from the critical post-Civil War era, Oakwood University was established in response to the pressing need for higher education for newly freed African-Americans in the South. In 1896, under the guidance of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, a 360-acre former plantation was transformed into a school dedicated to empowering students with practical skills and spiritual direction. This commitment to holistic development, rooted in its founding principles, continues to shape its mission today.
From its early days as the Oakwood Industrial School, where students paid tuition through on-campus work in machine shops, farms, print shops, and laundries, Oakwood has evolved while retaining its hands-on approach. By 1917, it offered diverse programs including theology, farming, teaching, masonry, and pre-nursing, demonstrating an early commitment to a broad curriculum. Today, students at Oakwood experience a vibrant community focused on personal growth, academic rigor, and a strong sense of purpose, preparing them not just for careers, but for lives of service and impact.
