Oakwood University

Step into the rich legacy of Oakwood University, a distinguished private Historically Black College and University (HBCU) rooted in the vision of post-Civil War higher education for African Americans. Guided by the counsel of SDA Church co-founder Ellen G. White, Oakwood was established in 1896 on a 360-acre former plantation in Huntsville, Alabama. What began as the Oakwood Industrial School aimed to provide essential vocational education and spiritual direction, ensuring students gained practical skills while fostering their faith. Its motto, "Education, Excellence, Eternity," encapsulates its enduring commitment to holistic student development.

From its inception, Oakwood University was designed to be more than just an academic institution; it was a community where students actively participated in their learning journey. Early students were integral to the campus, working in industrial positions like machine shops, farms, print shops, laundries, and tailor shops to cover tuition. This hands-on approach instilled a strong work ethic alongside academic pursuits. Starting with just 16 students, Oakwood quickly grew, expanding its offerings to include theology, farming, teaching, masonry, and pre-nursing programs by 1917, reflecting its dedication to preparing students for a diverse range of professions.
