About Ohlone College
Ohlone College: Grounded in history, propelling students into health sciences and tech futures.
Nestled in the vibrant Alameda County, southeast of San Francisco Bay, Ohlone College stands as a beacon of education serving the communities of Fremont, Newark, and parts of Union City. More than just a name, Ohlone College proudly honors the indigenous Ohlone people, whose ancestral lands encompass the surrounding region, reflecting a deep respect for heritage as it builds for the future.
Established in 1965 as a California Community College, Ohlone College quickly took root with a board of trustees elected in 1966 and its founding president, Stephen Epler, appointed that same year. After opening its doors in a temporary location in 1967, the college embarked on an ambitious journey, issuing a $10 million municipal bond to construct its permanent Fremont campus. Designed by Ernest J. Kump, this academic village began construction in 1972, evolving over the years with key additions like a performing arts center, technology center, and a student services hub.
Today, Ohlone College operates across two dynamic campuses and a comprehensive e-campus, offering flexible and accessible learning opportunities. A significant expansion in 2008 saw the opening of The Ohlone College Newark Center for Health Sciences and Technology, underscoring the institution's commitment to cutting-edge education in vital fields. The college is also known for its impactful Biotechnology high school outreach programs, including the National Science Foundation-funded Learning Alliance for Bioscience (LAB) Program, which creates academic pathways for underrepresented students to excel in biotechnology careers.
With a legacy of dedicated leadership, including its most recent president, Charles S. Sasaki appointed in 2023, Ohlone College continues to empower students with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive. From its foundational respect for local history to its forward-thinking academic programs in health sciences and technology, Ohlone College offers a compelling and supportive environment for prospective students and their families seeking a pathway to success.
