Oklahoma Panhandle State University

Oklahoma Panhandle State University stands as a vital public institution nestled in the unique landscape of the Oklahoma Panhandle. The university's rich history began in 1909, opening its doors as the Pan-Handle Agricultural Institute (PAI). Initially established to meet the region's need for secondary agricultural education, PAI quickly adapted and expanded its offerings. By 1915, it began preparing public school teachers, and by 1921, it was authorized to offer a two-year college curriculum, changing its name to Panhandle Agricultural and Mechanical College (PAMC). This progressive spirit continued, leading to the offering of four-year degree programs by 1925, solidifying its role as a significant educational provider in the state.

Over the decades, the institution continued its evolution, being designated Oklahoma Panhandle State College of Agriculture and Applied Science in 1967, and finally assuming its current name, Oklahoma Panhandle State University, in 1974. This journey from an agricultural institute to a comprehensive university underscores OPSU's enduring commitment to educational advancement. Today, its legacy is preserved, notably with Franklin Hall, the university's oldest building, proudly listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
