Orange Coast College

Orange Coast College (OCC) offers a truly unique educational journey, rooted in a fascinating history of transformation. Established in 1947 following a community-backed initiative, OCC repurposed a 243-acre section of the deactivated Santa Ana Army Air Base. Early students and staff worked hand-in-hand to convert military buildings into vibrant academic spaces – an army movie theater became an auditorium, barracks became dormitories, and a service club became a gymnasium. This spirit of adaptive reuse and community engagement continues to define the college's innovative approach.

The campus architecture itself tells a story of evolution. Renowned architect Richard Neutra lent his modernist vision to the college in the early 1950s, creating striking, minimalist structures that integrated seamlessly with the adapted military buildings. Later, in the 1970s, William Blurock further modernized the campus, replacing many original army buildings with purpose-built educational facilities. This blend of historical adaptation and modern design creates a distinctive and inspiring environment for students.

Academically, OCC has demonstrated a commitment to hands-on learning and unique experiences. For instance, the college's marine science and biology programs benefited from the historical use of Rabbit Island (Wheeler Station) in British Columbia as a field station, offering students unparalleled opportunities for research and study in island ecology and oceanography. While the island has since been sold, this initiative highlights OCC's dedication to providing rich, experiential education.
