Orange Coast College

Orange Coast College, established in 1947, offers a dynamic learning environment rooted in a unique history. Born from the repurposing of a deactivated Army Air Base, the college quickly transformed its 243-acre site with initial efforts led by its first carpenter and a crew largely composed of student-athletes. This distinctive beginning set the stage for a campus that blends historical roots with modern design, including early contributions from renowned architect Richard Neutra and later expansions by William Blurock, creating a truly unique educational landscape.

Beyond its compelling origins, OCC has demonstrated a strong commitment to hands-on learning and environmental studies. For a significant period, the college utilized Rabbit Island, a 38-acre island in British Columbia, as a unique field station. This invaluable resource allowed students and instructors to conduct immersive summer classes in Island Ecology, Biological Diversity, Vertebrate Biology, and Intertidal Ecology, providing unparalleled research opportunities and highlighting the college's dedication to experiential education in marine sciences and biology.
