Oregon Institute of Technology, affectionately known as Oregon Tech, stands as a testament to practical education and adaptability. Founded on July 15, 1947, as the Oregon Vocational School, its initial mission was profoundly impactful: to train and re-educate returning World War II veterans. In its first year, an impressive 98 percent of students were veterans, underscoring its vital role in post-war reintegration and skill development.

Over the decades, Oregon Tech evolved, demonstrating a relentless commitment to academic rigor and relevance. The institution quickly gained recognition, achieving accreditation for associate degree programs in surveying and structural engineering by 1953, and later for its groundbreaking bachelor's degree programs in technology in 1970. This foundation of accredited, hands-on education has consistently prepared students for critical roles in a technology-driven world. The establishment of the first Geo-Heat Center in 1975 further highlights its dedication to innovative research and sustainable solutions.

The university's journey has also been marked by strategic growth and independence. After several name changes and campus consolidations, including rebranding to "Oregon Tech" and centralizing its Portland-area locations in Wilsonville in 2012, it cemented its identity as a forward-thinking institution. By 2015, Oregon Tech transitioned to an independent public body governed by its own Board of Trustees, empowering it to better serve its 5,490 students and the broader community with its specialized public college focus.
