Our Lady of the Lake University

Nestled in San Antonio, Texas, Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) stands as a beacon of academic excellence with a rich history rooted in faith and community. Founded in 1895 by the Sisters of Divine Providence, OLLU holds the distinction of being the first institution of higher education in San Antonio to receive regional accreditation, a testament to its enduring commitment to quality education. Its legacy is further highlighted by the renowned Worden School of Social Service, which proudly holds the title of the oldest Social Work school in Texas.

OLLU's journey began with high school programs, evolving into a two-year college curriculum for women in 1911. By 1919, it expanded to a four-year institution, and graduate studies began in 1942, notably as coeducational from the start. The university fully embraced coeducation across all programs by 1969. Over the decades, OLLU has consistently been at the forefront, earning accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools since 1923 and becoming one of the first Texas schools approved by the American Association of Universities in 1927.

Academically, OLLU offers a comprehensive range of programs, including bachelor's, master's, and two doctoral degrees, catering to a diverse student body across its main campus and satellite locations in Houston and the Rio Grande Valley. Committed to accessibility, OLLU pioneered the "Weekend College" concept in San Antonio in 1978, making higher education attainable for working adults. Students at OLLU, affectionately known as the Saints, thrive in a supportive environment, engaging in competitive athletics as part of the NAIA’s Red River Athletic Conference.

The spirit of OLLU is one of resilience and community. Following a devastating fire in 2008 that impacted its main building, the university community rallied, showcasing extraordinary dedication that led to the full reconstruction and reopening of the building by 2011. Under the leadership of President Abel A. Chávez, OLLU continues its mission to provide transformative education, embodying the values instilled by its founders and fostering a vibrant, engaging experience for all its students.
