Paier College

Founded in 1946 by Edward T. and Adele K. Paier as the Paier School of Applied Arts, Paier College embarked on a journey to provide specialized art education in Connecticut. Starting in West Haven, the institution quickly expanded its reach, even absorbing students from the Whitney School of Art, leading to its evolution into the Paier School of Art. Its early years were marked by growth and relocation, eventually settling in Hamden, where it expanded its physical footprint.

A significant milestone arrived in 1982 when Paier achieved accreditation as a four-year degree-granting college, solidifying its commitment to higher education in the arts. Over the decades, it continued to adapt, undergoing leadership changes, including the appointment of new presidents. In a notable strategic shift in March 2021, the college announced a name change to Paier College and ambitious plans to move its campus to Bridgeport, intending to utilize former facilities of the University of Bridgeport.

However, the college's later years were marked by considerable challenges. In July 2023, Paier College, along with its president, faced a lawsuit from the Connecticut Attorney General regarding alleged violations of the Connecticut Unfair Trade Practices Act. These issues escalated into 2024, with the college receiving a warning from its accreditor and facing faculty and staff terminations amidst an ownership change. Ultimately, after delays to the Fall 2024 semester and a denial of authorization to operate by the state in late September 2024, Paier College lost its accreditation in April 2025, leading to the unfortunate announcement that it would not be reopening.
