About Paier College
Paier College: A Legacy in Applied Arts, from Founding to Closure.
Paier College, originally established in 1946 by Edward T. and Adele K. Paier as the Paier School of Applied Arts, embarked on a journey dedicated to art education in West Haven, Connecticut. Evolving rapidly, it soon became the Paier School of Art after integrating students from the Whitney School of Art, solidifying its place as a cornerstone for aspiring artists.
Over the decades, Paier College demonstrated resilience and growth, relocating several times within Connecticut before expanding its Hamden campus in 1963. A significant milestone arrived in 1982 when it earned accreditation as a 4-year degree-granting college, allowing it to offer comprehensive artistic programs and further establish its academic credibility in the arts community.
However, the college faced considerable challenges in its later years. After a planned move to Bridgeport and a name change to Paier College in 2021, it encountered legal difficulties and warnings from its accreditor. Ultimately, the Connecticut Office of Higher Education denied its authorization to operate in late 2024, leading to the loss of accreditation in April 2025 and the subsequent announcement by its president that Paier College would not reopen, concluding its long history in art education.
