Originally known as Park College, it was born from the unique "Parkville Experiment," a visionary concept that offered students free tuition and board in exchange for working up to half a day in the college's various enterprises, from the farm to the printing plant. Park's history is literally built by its students, most notably with the construction of Mackay Hall, a majestic limestone structure that remains the focal point of the campus and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Students mined the limestone on campus and contributed their labor to build this defining landmark, symbolizing the institution's commitment to hands-on experience. The university also demonstrated an early global perspective, welcoming its first international student from Japan in 1880, and has maintained a profound connection with the military since 1889, significantly expanding its support for service members through specialized degree completion programs in the late 1960s and 1970s.
