The college's rich history began in 1962, initially established under the University of Virginia's School of General Studies. P&HCC quickly evolved, gaining independence as a two-year college in 1964, and by 1971, it proudly became an integral part of the comprehensive Virginia Community College System, expanding its reach and resources to better serve its students.

A particularly significant chapter in P&HCC's story unfolded in July 2021. In a move reflecting evolving societal values, the Virginia State Board of Community Colleges initiated changes for institutions named after figures with histories tied to slave ownership or racist policies. P&HCC embraced this opportunity, thoughtfully changing its name to honor Patrick County and Henry County directly. This progressive renaming underscores the college's deep connection to the communities it serves, focusing on the present and future rather than venerating a historical figure.
