Founded on April 4, 1872, in Austin, Texas, by a dedicated group of African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church preachers, the college began as the Connectional School for the Education of Negro Youth. Its early mission was crucial: to provide vital education and vocational training to freedmen in the post-Reconstruction era, initially teaching practical skills like blacksmithing and carpentry. The school later moved to Waco, Texas, evolving into Waco College, before being chartered by the State of Texas in 1881 and renamed Paul Quinn College in honor of Bishop William Paul Quinn, a significant figure in its early development.

Over the decades, Paul Quinn College expanded its academic offerings beyond vocational training to include classical subjects such as Latin, mathematics, music, theology, and English, reflecting a holistic approach to education. The mid-20th century saw significant physical expansion, enhancing campus facilities to support a growing student body. A groundbreaking moment arrived in 1962 when the college's charter was innovatively changed to allow trustees to be elected without regard to race, creed, or color, demonstrating a powerful commitment to inclusivity. This progressive spirit culminated in 1972 when the college proudly received its initial accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), affirming its high standards of education.

Today, under the dynamic leadership of President Michael J. Sorrell since 2007, Paul Quinn College continues to build on its legacy of innovation and community impact.
