The college's rich history began on September 4, 1974, as the State Technical Institute at Knoxville (STIK), initially focusing on vocational training. Under the visionary leadership of figures like Colonel John C. Mauer and its first president, Wayne Jones, STIK rapidly expanded its offerings, providing three associate degree programs in engineering technology to 45 eager students on its first day. Its commitment to quality education was quickly recognized with initial accreditation from SACS in 1977, solidifying its reputation as a serious academic institution.

A significant transformation occurred in 1983 when STIK joined the State University and Community College System of Tennessee, further integrating it into the state's higher education landscape. By 1986, the college established its enduring presence on a sprawling 445-acre campus in west Knox County. In 1988, its mission broadened considerably, leading to its renaming as Pellissippi State Technical Community College and the absorption of space previously shared, cementing its role as a comprehensive technical community college dedicated to preparing students for a variety of futures.
