The journey of Pellissippi State began on September 4, 1974, as the State Technical Institute at Knoxville (STIK). Initially focused on post-secondary vocational training, under the visionary leadership of Colonel John C. Mauer, it quickly expanded to offer three associate degree programs in engineering technology to its inaugural class of 45 students. This marked the beginning of its transformation. By 1977, under President Wayne Jones, STIK earned its initial accreditation, cementing its place as a credible institution. A significant milestone occurred in 1983 when it joined the State University and Community College System of Tennessee, broadening its reach and governance.

The college's physical and academic landscape continued to grow, moving to its current expansive 445-acre campus in 1986. Originally sharing facilities, the institution soon embraced a larger mission in 1988, officially becoming Pellissippi State Technical Community College. This pivotal moment saw the absorption of additional space and a significant expansion of its curriculum to include numerous university-parallel associate degree programs alongside its established technical offerings.
