Pennsylvania State University-Penn State Berks

Penn State Berks, nestled in Spring Township, has blossomed into a dynamic campus within the renowned Penn State system. With a thriving community of approximately 2,800 students, it offers a robust academic experience, blending the extensive resources of a major university with the intimate atmosphere of a smaller college. Catering to both residential and commuter students, it fosters a diverse and engaging learning environment.

The campus's history is as unique as it is compelling, tracing its origins back to 1927. It began not as a conventional university branch, but as an innovative training school for the Textile Machine Works, a prominent regional industry. This educational initiative, later known as the Wyomissing Polytechnic Institute (WPI), was established with the early support of the then-Pennsylvania State College, laying a unique foundation for its future evolution.

In a pivotal moment in 1958, WPI's founders generously offered its campus to Penn State, officially integrating it into the university as the "Wyomissing Center." Over the subsequent decades, the campus underwent significant transformations, including a strategic move to its expansive 241-acre Spring Township location in 1972, at which point it adopted its enduring name, "Penn State Berks." A landmark achievement in its journey occurred in 1997 when it began offering baccalaureate degrees independently, a role that was solidified in 2005 when it proudly became a stand-alone college within the Penn State system.

Today, Penn State Berks features 15 modern buildings and is powered by a dedicated faculty of 100 full-time and 70 part-time members. Its remarkable growth, from approximately 500 students in 1972 to its current 2,800, stands as a testament to its unwavering commitment to providing a high-quality, relevant education that prepares students for success.
