Pennsylvania State University-Penn State New Kensington

Nestled in the Alle-Kiski Valley, Pennsylvania State University-Penn State New Kensington was established in 1958, born from a crucial study highlighting the local community's need for accessible higher education. From its humble beginnings, graduating its first class in 1960, the campus evolved, dedicating itself to serving the region as a vital public satellite campus of the renowned Penn State system. This commitment fostered decades of learning and community engagement, providing opportunities close to home for generations of students.

The campus's physical growth mirrors its deepening roots in the community, beginning with a move to the old Parnassus School in 1963 before opening its present 35-acre site in 1966, thanks to a generous land donation from ALCOA. Over the years, the campus blossomed, adding key facilities such as the Engineering Building, Science & Technology Center, Physical Education Complex, and a modern Conference Center, continually enhancing the learning environment for its commuter student body.

However, after more than six decades of dedicated service, Penn State New Kensington is embarking on a significant two-year transition period, with its doors set to close permanently after the Spring 2027 semester. This decision, announced in May 2025, reflects considerable enrollment challenges, with student numbers declining significantly over the past decade to 432 in Fall 2024. Despite its proud history and vital role, the campus faced financial pressures and significant deferred maintenance, alongside a competitive landscape of numerous other colleges in the vicinity. During this transition, the university is committed to providing comprehensive support to its current students, faculty, and staff.
