Pennsylvania State University-Penn State New Kensington

Penn State New Kensington, established in 1958, has long served as a vital educational hub for the Alle-Kiski Valley. Born from a community need for higher education, the campus quickly grew from its initial New Kensington Center location to a dedicated, sprawling campus on land generously donated by ALCOA. Over the decades, it expanded to include modern facilities like an Engineering Building, Science and Administration complexes, a Library, Physical Education Complex, Theatre, Student Learning Center, and a Science and Technology Center.

As a public satellite campus of the renowned Pennsylvania State University system, Penn State New Kensington has provided accessible, quality education to generations of students. However, the university recently announced the difficult decision to close Penn State New Kensington after the Spring 2027 semester. This decision, made by the Board of Trustees in May 2025, reflects significant challenges including a sharp decline in enrollment, substantial financial losses, and considerable deferred maintenance costs.
