Pennsylvania State University-Penn State Shenango has served as a vital public satellite campus since 1965, offering a crucial pathway for local students to begin their Penn State journey. Founded through the dedicated efforts of the Shenango Valley Citizens College Procurement Committee, the campus has consistently focused on expanding higher education opportunities within its community, allowing students to access a world-class education close to home before potentially transferring to the flagship University Park campus.

From its humble beginnings holding classes in Kennedy Catholic High School, Penn State Shenango quickly established a permanent presence in downtown Sharon. The campus grew around existing structures like Sharon Hall and Lecture Hall, which were acquired and integrated into the university's footprint. A significant $9.4 million renovation completed in 2006-2007 modernized these core buildings, creating a beautiful enclosed glass atrium and transforming gymnasium space into the vibrant Great Hall, enhancing food service, fitness, and student activity areas.

Academically, the campus has offered diverse programs tailored to community needs. Notably, the Occupational Therapy Assistant program, established in 2013, found a modern home in the completely renovated Chadderton Laboratory, providing specialized training for an in-demand field. As a commuter-only campus, Penn State Shenango fostered a close-knit environment for students balancing their studies with local commitments, embodying the spirit of accessible higher education.

On May 22, 2025, the Penn State Board of Trustees announced the difficult decision to close Penn State Shenango after the Spring 2027 semester. This transition, stemming from declining enrollment and financial challenges, marks the conclusion of nearly 60 years of dedicated service to the Shenango Valley. The university is committed to providing comprehensive support to current students, faculty, and staff as the campus moves towards its closure, ensuring a smooth transition for all involved.
