Pennsylvania Western University, or PennWest, stands as a premier public institution, uniquely shaped by the rich histories and legacies of three distinguished universities: California, Clarion, and Edinboro. The journey to PennWest began with the individual founding of these three pillars. California University of Pennsylvania traces its origins back to 1852 as a local academy, evolving over the decades from a normal school to a state college renowned for its expanding graduate programs. Similarly, Clarion University of Pennsylvania, established in 1867 as a seminary in the state's rural northwest, grew steadily, becoming a normal school and later a full-fledged college with a broad range of offerings. Edinboro University of Pennsylvania, founded in 1857 as a teacher training institution, followed a parallel path, expanding its academic scope to become a prominent state college.

These three institutions eventually converged as integral parts of the State System of Higher Education, each achieving university status and expanding their reach and impact.
