About Pillar College
Pillar College: Embracing truth and resilience in faith-based higher education.
Pillar College stands as a private institution dedicated to "Truth in education," a motto that reflects its commitment to a values-based learning environment. While its origins trace back to a Wesleyan-Arminian Methodist seminary, today Pillar College offers a distinctive educational experience rooted in Christian principles. Prospective students will find a community focused on intellectual growth, spiritual development, and preparing for meaningful lives under the leadership of President Rupert A. Hayles, Jr., Ph.D.
The college's journey began in 1908 as the Zarephath Bible Institute, established by the Pillar of Fire International. Its early history involved deeply regrettable associations and views, which the Pillar of Fire International unequivocally repudiated in 1997, expressing deep regret and seeking forgiveness for past actions that fell short of Christian standards. This significant moment marked a renewed commitment to its foundational Christian values, emphasizing forgiveness and reconciliation. The institution transitioned to Somerset Christian College in 2001, signaling a new chapter in its academic pursuit.
Pillar College has also demonstrated remarkable resilience. After its campus was devastated by Hurricane Irene in 2011, the college bravely relocated to Newark, ensuring continuity for its students. This move led to its renaming as Pillar College in 2012, reflecting its new geographic focus beyond Somerset County. The expansion continued in 2020 with the opening of a second location in Paterson, underscoring its dedication to serving a broader community. Students at Pillar College are part of an evolving institution that values perseverance, community, and a forward-looking approach to education.
