Prairie View A & M University

Prairie View A&M University stands as a beacon of opportunity and a testament to resilience, proudly holding its place as the first state-supported institution of higher learning for African Americans in Texas. Established in 1876 as Alta Vista Agriculture & Mechanical College of Texas for Colored Youth, its very creation was championed by pioneering former slaves turned political leaders – State Senators Matthew Gaines and Walter Moses Burton, and State Representative William H.
