The college's rich history began as an all-male institution, envisioned by Bishop Matthew Harkins to provide advanced learning for Catholic youth in Rhode Island. From its humble beginnings with Harkins Hall and 71 students, Providence College quickly grew, introducing its first lay faculty, opening dormitories, and establishing its athletic identity as the "Friars." Early success in basketball, football, and baseball cemented its sporting presence. The institution earned regional accreditation in 1933 and expanded its academic offerings to include Master of Arts, Doctor of Philosophy, and Master of Science degrees by 1935, also launching its student newspaper, The Cowl.
