Reed College

Nestled in Portland, Oregon, Reed College stands apart as a private liberal arts institution deliberately designed for the intensely academic and intellectually curious. Founded in 1908 as the Reed Institute, the college held its first classes in 1911, named in honor of Oregon pioneers Simeon Gannett Reed and Amanda Reed. The vision for Reed was revolutionary, championed by its first president, William Trufant Foster, and supported by a generous land donation from William Mead Ladd. It was established as a coeducational, nonsectarian, and egalitarian institution, a bold statement against the prevailing educational norms, intended to create a space for profound intellectual engagement and academic freedom.
