Reinhardt University

Reinhardt University stands as a testament to the power of community-driven education, born from the visionary efforts of former Confederate Army Captain Augustus M. Reinhardt and Lieutenant-Colonel John J. A. Sharp. Established in 1883 amidst the challenges of post-Civil War Reconstruction, their goal was simple yet profound: to provide vital education for the citizens of impoverished Cherokee County. From its humble beginnings in an old cabinet and wood shop in Waleska, Reinhardt Academy quickly proved its resilience. Named in honor of Augustus Reinhardt's father, Lewis W. Reinhardt, the school persevered even after a tornado struck just a month after opening. This early setback only fueled the community's resolve, leading to the construction of a permanent, three-story building by January 1885, signifying a new chapter for the budding institution.

Over the subsequent century, Reinhardt University experienced significant growth, evolving from its initial modest footprint into a sprawling 540-acre campus with a 90-acre building site.
