Reinhardt University

Reinhardt University, nestled in the heart of Waleska, Georgia, boasts a rich and compelling history born from a desire to uplift a community. Founded in the challenging post-American Civil War era, it stands as a testament to the power of education and philanthropic vision. The institution's roots trace back to Augustus M. Reinhardt, a former Confederate Army Captain and successful Atlanta lawyer, and his brother-in-law, John J. A. Sharp, who together envisioned a school to serve the citizens of an impoverished Cherokee County.

Their commitment transformed into action in 1883 as plans solidified. By 1884, Reinhardt Academy, named in honor of Augustus's father, Lewis W. Reinhardt, opened its doors in an old cabinet and wood shop, welcoming its first students under the tutelage of James T. Linn, an Emory College graduate. Despite a tornado striking Waleska just a month after opening, the school persevered, using downed trees to construct its first permanent, three-story framed building by January 1885, capable of housing 11 classes of students.

Over the ensuing century, Reinhardt University has grown exponentially, expanding its physical presence to a 90-acre building site within an impressive 540-acre campus. While the original 19th-century structures are no longer standing, the spirit of community, resilience, and dedication to accessible education that inspired its founders continues to thrive.
