Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), pronounced "Riz-D," stands as a premier private art and design institution nestled in Providence, Rhode Island. The school's rich history traces back to Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf, who, inspired by the 1876 Centennial Exposition's Women's Pavilion, championed the need for accessible design education, particularly for women. Utilizing surplus funds from the Centennial Women's committee, Metcalf successfully lobbied for the establishment of a coeducational design school. On March 22, 1877, the Rhode Island General Assembly officially ratified its incorporation, setting forth objectives focused on instructing artisans, training artists, and advancing public art education.

Today, RISD continues its legacy of excellence, offering bachelor's and master's degree programs across 19 diverse majors to approximately 2,500 students. A hallmark of the RISD experience is its esteemed affiliation with Brown University, located immediately adjacent on College Hill.
