Richard Bland College

Richard Bland College, established in 1960, stands as the Commonwealth of Virginia's dedicated public junior college, a vital branch campus of the esteemed College of William and Mary. Its enduring mission is to extend accessible higher education opportunities, particularly for students in communities outside the main Williamsburg campus. The college prides itself on providing a foundational academic experience, preparing students for successful transfers to four-year institutions.

Named in honor of Richard Bland, a pivotal Virginia statesman and advocate for colonial rights, the college carries a profound historical legacy. Bland, an alumnus of William and Mary, was a staunch defender of Virginia's autonomy and authored significant works like "An Inquiry into the Rights of the British Colonies." The college's sprawling 750-acre rural campus itself is steeped in history, having served as a Civil War-era plantation, witnessing two significant battles, and even hosting Abraham Lincoln during the Union siege of Petersburg. Later, it transformed from a dairy farm and a series of training schools into the vibrant educational institution it is today.

Beyond its historical roots, Richard Bland College offers a distinctive student experience. The picturesque campus boasts a century-old pecan grove, charmingly restored farmhouses, a unique koi pond, and a dairy barn cleverly converted into a theater. Recognizing the diverse needs of its student body, RBC uniquely added residential facilities in 2008, making it the only two-year college in Virginia to offer on-campus housing. Under the leadership of its fourth president, Debbie L. Sydow – the first woman to hold the position – the college continues to foster a supportive environment, cultivating a robust alumni network of over 18,000 individuals globally and contributing significantly to the regional economy.
