Rio Hondo College

Rio Hondo College stands as a vibrant public community college, embodying its inspiring motto: "Start Rio...Go Anywhere!" Founded in 1963, this institution serves as a crucial launchpad for students embarking on their educational and career journeys. Under the leadership of Interim President Teresa Dreyfuss, Rio Hondo College is dedicated to providing accessible and quality education, setting its students on a path toward future success, whether that means transferring to a four-year university or entering the workforce.

The college's roots run deep, with the Rio Hondo College District being established in October 1960, initially serving the Whittier Union High School District before expanding its reach. This foundational period culminated in April 1962 with the establishment of a board of trustees. In a significant step in May 1963, the proposed community college was proudly named Rio Hondo, a tribute to the nearby Rio Hondo River, symbolizing its connection to the community it serves.

Community support has been a cornerstone of Rio Hondo's development. In October 1963, district voters overwhelmingly approved a US$12 million bond, paving the way for the construction of a dedicated campus. While the permanent campus was being built, classes were temporarily held at Sierra and El Rancho High Schools, highlighting the early commitment to education. The much-anticipated present campus, located off Workman Mill Road, officially opened its doors to students in Fall 1966, providing a modern and dedicated environment for learning and growth, a tradition it continues to uphold today.

With a strong financial backing, including a $0.1 billion endowment, Rio Hondo College offers a robust educational experience. It’s a place where students are encouraged to explore their passions, build foundational skills, and confidently take their next steps, empowered by an institution that truly believes in their potential to "Go Anywhere!".
