By April 1962, a dedicated board of trustees was formed, and in May 1963, the institution officially received its name, Rio Hondo, inspired by the nearby river. The community's commitment was further solidified in October 1963 when voters overwhelmingly approved a US$12 million bond, paving the way for the college's development.

While the permanent campus on Workman Mill Road opened its doors in Fall 1966, showcasing a swift transformation from concept to concrete, Rio Hondo College initially began by holding classes at local high schools.
