The journey of R-CCC began uniquely in 1967, when an abandoned prison compound in Hertford County was transformed into a promising educational institution. Bolstered by funds from the North Carolina General Assembly, it was initially established as a technical institute dedicated to two-year vocational and technical training. This foundation evolved over time, with the institution first becoming Roanoke-Chowan Technical College in 1981, and then broadening its scope to become Roanoke-Chowan Community College in 1987, reflecting its expanded role in serving diverse educational needs across the region.
