It began in 1967 with the ambitious vision of establishing a vital 2-year vocational and technical training institution, made possible by funds from the North Carolina General Assembly. Its initial home was a thoughtfully repurposed abandoned prison compound, a testament to resourcefulness and dedication to community upliftment.

Evolving with the needs of its community, the institution first operated as a technical institute. In 1981, it was formally recognized as Roanoke-Chowan Technical College, a step that further solidified its commitment to technical excellence. This journey culminated in 1987 when it embraced its broader role, officially becoming Roanoke-Chowan Community College.
