Rochester Community and Technical College

Rochester Community and Technical College (RCTC) stands as a testament to pioneering education, blending a rich historical legacy with modern, comprehensive learning opportunities. Born from a visionary initiative in 1915, RCTC has evolved into a vibrant institution renowned for its dual focus on transfer-ready academic programs and career-focused technical training, making it an ideal choice for students seeking diverse pathways to success.

The college's origins trace back to a pivotal moment in 1915 when healthcare pioneer Charles Mayo championed the creation of a 'University Department' within the Rochester high school. This bold move led to the founding of Rochester Junior College (RJC), which proudly graduated its first class of 10 students in 1917. Over the decades, RJC matured, eventually becoming Rochester State Junior College in 1964 and Rochester Community College in 1973, laying the groundwork for its robust academic offerings.

Parallel to this growth, a strong vocational education tradition emerged in Rochester. Starting with adult vocational classes in 1944, this arm developed into the Rochester Area Vocational Technical Institute (RAVTI), opening its dedicated 78,000-square-foot facility in 1969 with 15 program majors and 213 students. Continuous expansion and renaming, including a significant 70,000-square-foot addition in 1987 and its transformation into Rochester Technical College by 1989, underscored its commitment to hands-on, career-oriented learning.

The ultimate strength of RCTC was forged on July 1, 1996, when Rochester Community College and Rochester Technical College officially consolidated. This strategic merger created the comprehensive institution known today, offering an expansive curriculum that caters to both students aiming for four-year degrees and those seeking immediate entry into skilled professions.
