Rockford University

Step into the rich legacy of Rockford University, an institution that has championed education and adaptation for over 175 years. Founded in 1847 as the Rockford Female Seminary, it began as a pioneering sister college to Beloit College, providing advanced learning opportunities for women at a time when such opportunities were rare. Its initial campus graced the scenic east side of the Rock River, shaping generations of bright minds under the dedicated leadership of figures like Anna Peck Sill.

Over the decades, Rockford University continuously evolved to meet the needs of a changing world. In 1890, its trustees boldly voted to expand its offerings to a full college curriculum, leading to its renaming as "Rockford College" in 1892. This transformation solidified its commitment to comprehensive education, a vision further propelled by leaders such as Phebe Temperance Sutliff, who served as president from 1896 to 1901.

A pivotal moment arrived in the 1950s when, at the beginning of the 1955–1956 academic year, men were first admitted, marking a significant transition to a co-educational institution. This decision showcased Rockford's forward-thinking approach and dedication to inclusivity. Further demonstrating its expansive vision, Rockford College founded Regent's College in London in 1984, which has since grown into Regent's University London, extending Rockford's educational philosophy across continents and offering a truly global perspective.
