The college's compelling history stretches back to 1878 with the founding of the Montana Collegiate Institute in Deer Lodge. This institution, later renamed the College of Montana, laid crucial groundwork for higher education in the state. Concurrently, the Billings Polytechnic Institute (BPI) emerged in 1908, becoming Billings' first post-secondary institution and establishing a vital presence that continues to define the campus on Poly Drive today.

The early 20th century saw a series of transformative mergers. Following the closure of the College of Montana, its assets, along with those of Montana Wesleyan College, were incorporated into Intermountain Union College (IUC) in 1923. A pivotal moment occurred in 1935 when IUC relocated to the Billings Polytechnic campus after devastating earthquakes in Helena. This set the stage for the landmark merger in 1947, when IUC and BPI united, and students themselves chose the name: Rocky Mountain College, forging the institution we know today.
