The journey of RMCAD began in January 1963, when artist and educator Philip J. Steele established the institution, initially known as the "Rocky Mountain School of Art," after acquiring Art for All Studios. This foundation set the stage for a school deeply rooted in artistic practice. Over the years, the college expanded its reach, necessitating several relocations before settling into its current Lakewood campus in 2003. A significant evolution occurred in 2010 when owners of Full Sail University acquired a controlling share, initiating a strategic restructuring of the college and its curriculum to enhance its educational offerings.

RMCAD is committed to providing an education that adapts to the evolving landscape of art and design. This commitment was further demonstrated in 2014 when the college restructured its in-person campus course schedule and transitioned many liberal arts courses online, aiming for both alignment and efficiency.
