Rocky Mountain College of Art and Design (RMCAD) stands as a vibrant hub for aspiring artists and designers, offering a unique educational experience rooted in creative exploration. The college's journey began in January 1963 when artist and educator Philip J. Steele acquired the Art for All Studios school. Steele envisioned a new direction, renaming it the 'Rocky Mountain School of Art' and later incorporating it in 1972. This early foundation laid the groundwork for RMCAD's enduring legacy in art education, marking it as a significant institution in the region's creative landscape. Its growth saw multiple relocations, culminating in a pivotal move in 2003 to a dedicated campus in the vibrant suburb of Lakewood, providing students with a focused environment for their studies.

A new chapter unfolded in 2010 when the college underwent a significant change in ownership, with the proprietors of Full Sail University acquiring a controlling share. This acquisition spurred a proactive initiative to restructure the college and its curriculum, ensuring RMCAD remains at the forefront of contemporary art and design education. Further adapting to the evolving educational landscape, by 2014, RMCAD strategically aligned its in-person and online course schedules and transitioned most liberal arts courses online to cut costs, demonstrating a commitment to innovative and accessible learning models. This blend of historical roots and forward-thinking adaptation defines the RMCAD student experience, encouraging both traditional artistry and modern approaches.
