In July 2007, the law school garnered national attention following a racist statement made by university trustee Ralph Papitto, for whom the school was then named. This incident sparked significant student protest, culminating in a powerful petition submitted to the administration. The students' unwavering commitment to their values prompted swift action from the university.

As a direct result of the student advocacy, on July 18, 2007, Papitto requested his name be removed from the school. He subsequently resigned as chairman from the board, succeeded by Richard Bready.
