Rush University

Rush University stands as a beacon of health sciences education, built upon a foundation of nearly two centuries of medical excellence. Its origins trace back to the ambitious vision of Daniel Brainard, MD, who chartered Rush Medical College in 1837, even before Chicago was formally a city. Named in honor of Benjamin Rush, a prominent physician, humanitarian, and signer of the Declaration of Independence, the college was established with a deep commitment to scientific education for all, including women, and providing care for the underserved.

Over the years, Rush Medical College overcame significant challenges, including rebuilding after the devastating Great Chicago Fire of 1871, to become one of the nation's largest and most distinguished medical schools. It played a crucial role in supplying physicians to the expanding rural areas of the Midwest and West. Its commitment to academic rigor led to an affiliation with the University of Chicago in 1898, further solidifying its reputation for excellence in medical training.

The institution underwent a pivotal transformation in the mid-20th century. After a temporary suspension during World War II, the medical college charter was reactivated. The merger of Presbyterian Hospital (Rush's original teaching hospital) with St. Luke's Hospital in 1956 formed Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center. This paved the way for the re-establishment of Rush Medical College in 1971 and the official founding of Rush University in 1972, ushering in a new era of comprehensive health sciences education.
