Rush University

Rush University stands as a beacon of medical education and healthcare, rooted in a rich history that dates back to 1837 with the chartering of Rush Medical College. Founded by Daniel Brainard, it opened its doors just a few days before Chicago itself was chartered as a city, quickly becoming an integral part of the nascent metropolis. The institution is proudly named after Dr. Benjamin Rush, a revered signer of the Declaration of Independence and a prominent physician known for his humanitarian leadership, advocacy for the abolition of slavery, and commitment to scientific education for all, including women.

From its early days, Rush Medical College distinguished itself, weathering challenges such as the Great Chicago Fire of 1871 and rebuilding to establish its permanent home. By the end of the 19th century, it was recognized as one of the nation's largest and most distinguished medical schools, playing a crucial role in supplying physicians to the Midwest and beyond. This era also saw a significant affiliation with the University of Chicago, further solidifying its academic standing before the partnership concluded amidst the demands of World War II.

The mid-20th century marked a period of revitalization and growth. In 1956, Presbyterian Hospital, which had served as Rush's teaching hospital since 1884, merged with St. Luke's Hospital, creating a robust medical center. This momentum culminated in the formation of Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center in 1971, leading to the triumphant reopening of Rush Medical College. Today, with a thriving student body of 2,816, Rush University continues its legacy of excellence, driven by its motto "Ministrare per scientiam" – To Serve Through Knowledge – nurturing future healthcare leaders dedicated to making a profound impact on society.
